Common Cold: Symptoms, Causes & Cure

By Dr. Anisha · 21 July 2023

The common cold is the most prevalent infection across all age groups, with children being particularly vulnerable.

Definition

An acute illness characterized by inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose — and sometimes the pharynx — caused by a group of viruses, typically lasting a few days.

Symptoms

  • Nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, fatigue, sneezing, sore throat, and general malaise
  • Mild fever, dry mouth, and possible cough
  • Generalized body aches and pain
  • Red, painful eyes from onset, which may indicate an adenovirus infection
  • Fever with nasal discharge, headache, and sinus/ear pain from secondary infection

Causes

  • Secondary bacterial infection following a viral infection (pneumococcus, streptococcus, staphylococci)
  • Crowded conditions or overeating in public spaces

Incubation Period

24 to 48 hours.

Homeopathic Treatment

Treatment varies according to the exact symptom picture. Commonly indicated remedies include Aconite, Allium cepa, Arsenic album, Bryonia alba, Hepar sulph, and Rhus tox — each matched to a specific presentation of symptoms.

General supportive care includes rest, adequate hydration, fresh fruits, warm soups and vegetables, and fresh air. Recurrent colds warrant a full constitutional homeopathic evaluation from a professional rather than repeated acute treatment.
