Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV): Treatment, Symptoms, and Effects on Children and Adults
By Dr. Anisha · 7 January 2025
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that, while lesser known than the flu or RSV, can cause a range of illnesses — from mild cold-like symptoms to severe lung infections.
Symptoms
- Runny or congested nose
- Cough and sore throat
- Fever
- Shortness of breath and wheezing
- Fatigue
While these symptoms are often mild, in some cases — particularly in young children and older adults — HMPV can cause more severe respiratory issues such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis.
Transmission
HMPV spreads through direct contact with an infected person or with contaminated surfaces.
Effects on Children and Adults
Young children and infants face a heightened risk of severe infection, potentially requiring hospitalization for conditions such as bronchiolitis. Adults with underlying respiratory conditions or compromised immunity may also develop pneumonia and other complications.
Homeopathic Treatment
- Aconitum napellus — for sudden onset of cold-like symptoms with fever
- Bryonia alba — for a dry cough and chest discomfort that worsens with movement
- Arsenicum album — for breathing difficulty and symptoms that worsen at night
Prevention
Good respiratory hygiene — covering coughs and sneezes, regular handwashing, and avoiding close contact with unwell individuals — remains the best defence, since there are currently no vaccines or specific antiviral treatments available for HMPV.
